FOR THE VARIETY
Trails: To the west of Johannesburg lies a large rocky ridge and on the top of that ridge is Krugersdorp. Fortunately, there’s some big gaps in the rock and in one of those gaps is the location of Hobby Park, a managed urban trails park that’s a favourite among local mountain bikers.
The trails at Hobby Park cater for all levels of mountain biker, but with particular emphasis on the Intermediate and Beginner rider. There are some more technical sections to challenge strong and experienced riders too. These branch off the Red and Yellow Trails. The trail builders have used the available gradient well and ensured that the more challenging areas fall into Red and Yellow trails routes, ideal for Intermediate and Experienced riders. The tamer gradient is used for Green and Blue trails, which are aimed at Beginner and social riders. The vegetation is quite varied and includes wattle forest, eucalyptus trees, open grassland and protea plantations.
There are four main trails:
-
Green – Novice/Beginner
-
Blue – Intermediate
-
Yellow – Intermediate
-
Red - Experienced/Advanced
All levels of rider can get in at least 90 minutes of riding without repeating any trails. Those who want to ride a longer distance can link up to the (almost) adjacent Kingskloof Trails, which add distance and are rather challenging.
